Jan 13, TenkaraBum Traveler 27

The Tenkarabum Traveler 27 may just be the ideal rod for fishing small streams. It is short enough to use almost anywhere. It is sensitive enough to be fun with 6" brookies, yet can easily handle fish twice that size. People have caught larger fish with its predecessor, the GM Suikei Keiryu Special 27, but the rods are not intended to be big fish rods. They are intended to be small stream rods. It seems there has been some confusion about the TenkaraBum Traveler 27. Unlike the 39 and 44, it is not a three position zoom rod. It is a 27, period. I know there are some short zoom rods out there, but I have not been impressed with the ones I have seen. I was more interested in a short, simple rod that does what it does very well without the added complexity and added cost that a zooming design entails.

If you have not yet purchased the Discovering Tenkara DVDs you may want to, and soon. Paul Gaskell and John Pearson of Discover Tenkara have lost their production rights and will not be able to offer the DVDs again. I still have a few copies in stock but when they are gone they will be gone forever. The three DVDs, An Introduction to Tenkara, Basics & Fundamentals; Japanese Kebari, Patterns & Principles; and Japanese Kebari, Practical Fishing Applications are very nearly a complete course on tenkara - taught by highly skilled Japanese tenkara anglers. Order the DVDs here: Discovering Tenkara DVDs

Disovering Tenkara DVDs

It's not just the DVD's that will be gone forever - most of the whole Tenkara in Focus library of work will disappear on January 31. You can still get the entire season 1 of Tenkara in Focus, already downloaded onto a USB drive - but only until January 31. Then *poof* most of it will cease to exist. Order the USB drive and other downloads here: Tenkara in Focus Downloads

The Tenryu Furaibo TF39 Betchou is a special order limited edition tenkara rod that blends Japanese culture (tenkara) and Japanese technique (Nishijin weaving). Traditionally, the elaborately woven Nishijin silk textiles were use for making kimonos. Tenryu has partnered with Nishijin weavers to make a tenkara rod with carbon fabric that features an intricate Nishjin weave. The pattern of the weave is absolutely beautiful, but it is difficult to form the Nishijin carbon cloth into the tubular shape of a fishing rod. Because of the additional hand labor required to make the rods, and the small number of craftsmen who have the required skills, each rod takes much longer to make than a Tenryu Furaibo TF39. For that reason, the rods will be a limited edition, available only by reservation (pre-order), and expensive.

Not long ago, one of my customers said he was planning to start a keiryu fishing guide service and wanted to use Daiwa Sieryu X 64 rods instead of keiryu rods. Since I first heard the idea of using a 6.4m seiryu rod for keiryu fishing I haven't been able to get it out of my mind. Today was the first reasonably warm day since he first mentioned it to me, so I set out to try it with a Suntech Kurenai HM63R and a Daiwa Seiryu X 54 (he bought the last Seiryu X 64 I had in stock and the replacements have not yet arrived). Winter fishing has never been very productive for me. A one-fish day is a good day and a two-fish day is reason to celebrate. I don't recall ever having a "many" day it the winter. Today I had high hopes but low expectations.

Jan 23, Horsehair Line Kit

This morning I saw a post on Facebook saying every tenkara angler should have a horsehair line. They are indeed traditional, and they do cast very nicely. Saying you should import a horsehair line from Japan is like saying you should import your flies from Japan, though. You could do that, but most tenkara anglers in the US choose to tie their own flies. It is no more difficult to construct your own horsehair line. TenkaraBum.com started selling horsehair tenkara lines in 2010, replacing the lines with DIY kits in 2011. The kits offered several advantages over purchasing a horsehair line: 1. The satisfaction of catching fish on a line you made yourself - very similar to the satisfaction of catching fish on flies you tied yourself. 2. The ability to customize the weight and length of the line for your rod and your fishing style. 3. The materials and instruction that allow you to repair your line when it breaks - and if there are trees and bushes around where you fish, you will get snags and you will break your line. 4. Sufficient material to make several lines, not just one. Advantages over the imported line referenced in the Facebook post: 1. White hair rather than dark brown hair so your line will be much more visible to you and much less visible to the fish. 2. Significantly lower cost. They do cast very nicely. It's still too cold to fish. Get a Horsehair Line Kit and tie a few lines!

by Les Albjerg This article is about raising Red Wigglers for fishing in a way that is easy and convenient. We aren't composting. Raising them in an "urban" environment can be a challenge. Having worms in the house or apartment can lead to spousal friction. With those challenges in mind, I have spent the last 5 months working on several worm projects. I would like to share the system I have worked out that allows you to grow your fishing worms discretely in the house with minimal space. I call it "The Park Avenue Worm Ranch."
